Creating Goals Out of Inspiration Not Desperation
I’ve often set goals out of sheer desperation, and I always felt the emptiness while chasing them
How often do your goals arise from genuine inspiration?
The most impactful goals are created from a vision, not a crisis.
I’ve often set goals out of sheer desperation, and I always felt the emptiness while chasing them. I understood this perspective on goal creation when I got my hands on the book, Don’t Believe Everything You Think by Joseph Nguyen.
Where he shares, there are two sources of goals: goals created out of inspiration, and goals made out of desperation. Since then, whenever I aim to do anything, I always ask myself, “Do I want to do this out of desperation or inspiration?”
Being aware of this question puts me in the right direction instantly.
When goals are created out of desperation
We feel a large sense of scarcity and urgency; it will feel heavy and even a burden.
These goals are set by always looking for answers externally, what others are doing, what’s perceived as good by society, or what our family wants us to do. We’ll experience imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and feel like we never have enough time for anything.
For example, we want to build a million-dollar business because we’ve got to achieve financial freedom, or we have to quit our 9-to-5 to get freedom.
When this perspective creates our goals, we’ll never feel content and satisfied, even when we achieve them. We will be clueless about what to do next. We will look outside for guidance.
We see others moving ahead. So, we set another goal out of desperation to escape this negative feeling.
When goals are created out of inspiration,
They feel like a calling, a divine energy rather than an obligation.
We made these goals not to get or show. We made them because we feel pulled by a force to create. This force comes from within us to be manifest in the physical world. We do not want anything in return.
That’s the difference; we start creating from a place of abundance instead of lack. The creation happens for no other reason than because we just want to. When we feel like we HAVE to do something instead of WANTING to do it, we’ll always act out of desperation.
Find what you want to do by looking inside, not outside for the answers.
Stop creating goals with an objective to get something out of them rather than doing it because you want to do it. Do things you want to, not what you have to.
When you start thinking too much, you cut off the source of inspiration to create, and then fall back into a state of desperation.
How can you tell if a goal is set from inspiration or desperation?
When goals and dreams come in the form of thought, they’re created out of inspiration.
Goals and dreams that come from thinking are created out of desperation. No goals are good or bad; it just depends on the source of the goals and not necessarily the goal itself.
